Denver is currently planning the removal of all parking on the west side of Lowell Blvd from 46th to 52nd . This is to create a protected bike lane.
Lowell Blvd is a heavily traveled road as you know with a recorded average of approx. 17,000 cars daily. It is not a safe place for bikes and even a “protected” bike lane could be dangerous. The current bike route is on Tennyson and another on Perry, however they want another on Lowell.
Lowell has 10 more units finishing construction with another 6 or 7 unit row home coming. That will add another 20 plus cars and that’s just between 49th to 50th alone. Also, in the works is the removal of all parking on 50th from Lowell to Tennyson same as they have done from Lowell to Federal.
Without making our voices heard now, these projects will move forward. This will cause major parking issues on the neighborhood side streets, as that will be the only available place for cars to park. If you enjoy parking in front of your house - now is the time to GET LOUD before you’re walking blocks with your groceries and kids in tow.
By narrowing the driving lanes in both directions and eliminating the westbound turn lanes on both 46th and 50th, Lowell Blvd. will essentially become one big parking lot. Forcing drivers to find another route, by diverting this traffic off of Lowell there is a good chance we will lose all of our small businesses that make our neighborhood what it is.
To be clear, we are NOT anti bike lane, we feel adding a bike lane to the busiest boulevard in the neighborhood that sees 17,000 vehicles a day, many of which are traveling at unsafe speeds would be highly unsafe. Which is why we’re urging our representatives to develop a plan that does not include Lowell.
